Marlon Humphrey isn’t backing down from his tweet criticizing American gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles for bowing down to Brazilian gold medalist Rebeca Andrade
at the Paris Olympics last month, and he insists he did not disrespect Brazil with the controversial comment.
After photos of Biles and Chiles bowing to Andrade went viral for their show of sportsmanship, Humphrey tweeted,
“This is literally disgusting,” setting off a firestorm that even caught the attention of Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and general manager Eric DeCosta.
“Dude, lemme tell you my perspective. I get on … Twitter, I was like, what the frick? Why are we bowing to anybody?
This is freaking America, why are we bowing to another country?
I didn’t even know what country that was, honestly,” Humphrey said on the latest episode of his “Punch Line” podcast.
“I just seen two people bowing, I said, ‘This is crazy,’ just from a whole human perspective, ethical. Should never bow to no man except God. So I said, ‘Golly this is wild.’
“Tweeted that and said, ‘Dang, that is Simone Biles. I might get cooked by the Biles army.’ Clearly, I’m not a gymnast guy. I didn’t know if she had an army.”
Humphrey, 28, claimed he was unaware of any backlash until people were asking him about the tweet at practice and his social media pages were getting flooded by comments featuring Brazilian flags, along with a spike in follower count.
The Pro Bowl cornerback said he heard from his sister after a Ravens practice letting him know people were mad, but at first, he was fine with the reaction.
“I believe there’s no such thing as bad media,” Humphrey said.
Humphrey then brought up Michelle Obama’s reaction to the bowing.
‘It was like three days later, she was like, ‘I think this is such a good thing.’ it wasn’t necessarily…” Humphrey said before his cohost, Jack Settleman, interjected to say it was because of Humphrey.
“It was, it was. I was like, “Michelle Obama knows me?” It’s kinda fire,” Humphrey replied.
‘I was at the White House, was by [Barack] Obama, so she might have had googly eyes for me way back when, back in college. I’m just saying, was at her crib.’ She did invite me to her crib.”
