Emmerdale fans think writers have “gone too far” after Tom’s “pretty sick” act in Monday night’s instalment of the show.
As viewers of the ITV soap will know, Belle previously left Tom after months of abusive and controlling behaviour.
In Friday night’s episode, he took drastic measures and purposely ran over their dog Piper in a desperate attempt to worm his way back into their marital home.
In tonight’s episode (Monday, August 19), viewers were subjected to upsetting scenes as vet Tom broke the news to Belle that Piper couldn’t be saved,
despite his and Rhona’s continuous work throughout the night. Lydia Dingle – who had been looking after Piper at the time of the accident – blamed herself for the tragedy,
but Tom said he wanted to give Belle the news himself.
As Tom broke the news to her, Belle asked to see Piper for a final time before she was put to sleep and sobbed that the dog was “the best friend she could ever wish for and she loved her so much”. Her final words to Piper were “sleep tight, my precious girl”.
After putting Piper to sleep, even Tom shed a tear, telling Belle that she had been the “best mummy”. Tom claimed that he “couldn’t handle the rest of the day at work”, and took the opportunity to walk home with Belle, warning her that she should be “aware and mindful” of her mental health after losing Piper, before suggesting that it would be better if someone stayed in her with the house at a time like this.
While Tom thought it would be his opportunity to get closer to Belle again, it all came crashing down as she worked out that he must have been the one responsible for running her over.
With Rhona witness to the conversation, Belle accused Tom of running Piper over, telling Rhona that he would “often use Piper against her”. Despite viewers knowing what really happened, Tom yet again denied everything and fumed that it was all in her head.
Taking Tom’s side, Rhona tried to reason with Belle but she told Tom that she would “never forgive him”. Later in the episode, Rhona reassured Tom that she knew how much he loved Piper, and explained that she finally understood how difficult it must have been for him to live with Belle.
As Belle shared her concerns about Tom’s actions with Lydia, Tom could be smirking as he revelled in the fact that no one believed Belle’s accusations.
